Website Homepage Design: 6 Things It Must Get Right

Your homepage is doing more work than you think. Research shows visitors form an opinion of a website in about 0.05 seconds — that's a twentieth of a second, before they've read a single word — and roughly 94% of that first impression comes down to design. So getting your website homepage design right isn't a nice-to-have. It's the difference between someone reaching for the phone and someone hitting the back button.

The good news is you don't need a huge budget or a computer science degree to get this right. You just need to know what a homepage is actually for, and make sure yours nails the essentials. Here are the six things every small business homepage must get right.

1. Say who you are and what you do — instantly

The single most common homepage mistake I see is making people guess. A clever tagline like "Crafting moments that matter" might feel lovely, but if I can't tell within a couple of seconds whether you're a florist, a physio or a plumber, I'm gone. Your headline should say plainly what you do and who you do it for — for example, "Reliable electricians for homes and businesses across Ashford and Kent." Boring? Maybe. Clear? Absolutely. And clear always wins.

2. Get your homepage design working above the fold

"Above the fold" means everything a visitor sees before they scroll. It's your shop window, and in good website homepage design it needs to carry three things: what you do, why someone should trust you, and what to do next. That means a clear headline, a supporting line, and a button. Don't waste this space on a giant slideshow or a stock photo of a handshake — use it to answer the question every visitor is silently asking: "Am I in the right place?"

People don't read websites, they scan them. Design your homepage for the skimmer in a hurry, not the reader with all afternoon.

3. Make the next step obvious

Every homepage needs a clear call to action — the one thing you want people to do. For most trades, wellness and hospitality businesses that's "book a call", "get a quote" or "check availability". Pick the main one and make it a button that stands out from everything around it. If your call to action blends into the page, or you offer five competing options, people freeze and do nothing. One clear, confident button beats a wall of choices every time.

4. Prove you can be trusted

Strangers on the internet need reasons to believe you. The quickest way to earn that trust on a homepage is social proof: a couple of real reviews, a row of recognisable logos, a "5 stars on Google" badge, or a line like "Trusted by 200+ Kent homeowners". Photos of real work and real faces help too — they quietly tell people you're a genuine local business, not a faceless website. A few honest signals near the top of the page do more heavy lifting than any amount of self-praise.

5. Load fast and look right on a phone

None of the above matters if your homepage is slow or awkward on mobile. Around 60% of web traffic now comes from phones, and Google judges your site on its mobile version. If your homepage takes more than a few seconds to appear, or if visitors have to pinch and zoom to tap a button, you'll lose people before they ever see your lovely headline. Test your own site on your phone, on mobile data, and be honest about how it feels.

6. Point people where to go next

A homepage isn't meant to say everything — it's a signpost. Below your opening section, guide visitors toward the pages that matter: your services, your prices, your portfolio, your contact details. Think of it as a friendly welcome that hands people off to the right room. Clear, simple navigation and a few well-chosen links keep people moving through your site instead of getting lost and giving up.

Bringing it all together

Strong website homepage design isn't about being flashy. It's about being clear, fast and trustworthy in the tiny window you get before someone decides. Say who you are, make the next step obvious, back it up with proof, and make sure it all works beautifully on a phone. Do that, and your homepage stops being a digital brochure and starts being your hardest-working member of staff.
